Ageism isn’t just about silvering hair, wrinkling, or having a man your age address you with the dreaded term “young lady.” IYKYK. If you don’t, ask me how I know…

Instead, ageism is a multifaceted issue that affects everyone, from young professionals in their twenties just trying to catch a break to seasoned professionals in their fifties who are passed over or “early retired” because they’re considered too old or too expensive in terms of salary, based on their experience.

Young professionals get dismissed as inexperienced, while seasoned pros get labeled as “out of touch.” Sound familiar?

As the worlds of nonprofit and federal professionals and the communities they serve are shaken up on the daily, the last thing we need is another perceived barrier that keeps us from working together for positive change.

A sense of humor can go a long way in breaking down age-related barriers. When Amanda and I first saw the session at the 2024 Grant Summit, hilariously dubbed “Ageism Motherf%&*#@,” – we knew we had to interview Maggie Dennis, GPC (Grant Professional Certified). With a rich background that includes working at the Smithsonian Institution and founding StoryForge, a grant consulting firm, in 2010, she is a testament to the diverse paths we can take in our careers.

Let’s just say a good time and a deep learning was had by all. To give the podcast episode a listen, click here.

Here’s the thing: ageism isn’t a one-way street. It’s not just about older workers being pushed aside. It happens at both ends of the career spectrum.

During our chat, Maggie shared her own experience of facing microaggressions based on being a “woman of a certain age,” such as working with a long-term client who suddenly starts suggesting you’re struggling to keep up – when you absolutely are not! These subtle comments can chip away at your confidence and professional identity.

But here’s where it gets interesting – and hopeful. We talked about how different generations are reimagining work. Millennials and Gen Z aren’t just climbing corporate ladders; they’re redefining what success looks like. It’s no longer about burning yourself out. It’s about purpose, balance, and continuous learning.

And speaking of learning, can we talk about the 93-year-old police officer who attended a training just to keep his mind active? Or my friend who published her first novel at 67? These aren’t exceptions – they’re proof that age is just a number. (Learn more about these two examples in the podcast episode!)

As a consultant, I’ve found some freedom in navigating these waters. When you’re not tied to one organization’s internal politics, you can speak truth to power. There’s a certain gravitas that comes with experience.

The real magic happens when we break down these generational barriers. Mentorship isn’t just about older professionals guiding younger ones. It’s a two-way street. I’m just as eager to learn about AI and new technologies from a twenty-something as they might be to learn about grant writing from me.

I encourage you to join me in challenging our built-in biases based on age and baked in my constant marketing and content that persists in labels without merit. Are you inadvertently perpetuating ageism—ignoring the opinion of someone younger or discounting the wisdom of a career veteran? Are you limiting yourself because you think you’re “too old” or “too young” to try something?

We are the age we are anyway; it’s just biology and calendaring. Might as well make it spectacular.
